Questions and answers

How Deepsize counts, what happens when you delete and what your computer keeps to itself.

Which size does Deepsize show?

Deepsize counts the space a file takes up on the drive. Exactly that much is freed when you delete it. In the settings you can switch to the file length, the bytes a file contains.

Hard links count once. Links are not followed and show as a small entry.

Why are some folders missing?

Folders Deepsize may not read are listed in the tree and marked; what is inside them is missing from the sizes. The status line says how many there are and lists them.

On the Mac some folders can only be read with Full Disk Access. Deepsize takes you to System Settings, then you scan again.

How does the result stay current?

After a complete scan Deepsize follows the changes on disk. Changed folders are listed again in the background and matched with the tree; new folders are scanned in full.

On Linux the system allows only a limited number of such watches. If they do not suffice, the status line says “partly live”. Saved scans are not followed.

What happens when I delete something?

Every deletion asks first and names the count and size. The entries go to the Trash, from where you can put them back until you empty it.

If a drive has no Trash, as some network drives, the confirmation says so plainly, because deleting is then final. A folder can be deleted once it is completely scanned.

What goes online?

Not your scans. Deepsize reads your drives on your computer, and names, paths and sizes stay there.

To look for updates and, if you use Pro, for the licence, Deepsize connects to the licence service of m8werk digital solutions UG. Without a connection Deepsize keeps working.

Which drives can Deepsize scan?

Every mounted drive: internal, external and network drives, one by one or together under “This Computer”. A drive you plug in shows up in the list right away.

Drives mounted inside a scanned folder are listed but not scanned. On Linux /proc, /sys, /dev and /run are left out. Both can be changed in the settings, where you can also exclude folders of your own.

Are scans saved?

Yes. Every complete scan is saved in the app's data folder and shows up under the recent scans. You can open it again without scanning and delete it when you no longer need it.

How does Deepsize find duplicates?

Deepsize checks files from a minimum size on, 1 MB to begin with. It compares the size first, then the start and end of the files, finally the whole content. The search runs in the background and can be stopped.

Hard links are not duplicates. Copies that share their space as an APFS clone are marked. Duplicates are part of Pro.

What is the difference between Free and Pro?

Free has the scan, all three views, the folder tree, the file types, every action and the live functions. Pro adds cleanup suggestions, duplicates and comparing scans.

Without Pro, cleanup suggestions and duplicates show what they find; picking and deleting needs Pro.

Which languages does Deepsize speak?

English and German. Deepsize follows the language of your system; you can set it in the settings.
